Remedies for Cough Relief



According to rankings released by World Air Quality Index (AIQ) Lahore ranked 2nd most polluted city in the world after Delhi, India. A few home remedies that can help children and adults to cope till the air clears up can be easily put together at home in a few minutes.



1. Onion Juice

Its not as bad as it sounds, trust me. It works wonders and is very simple to put together. Finely chop an onion and place it in a large sieve, preferably or I have also used a large bowl for this multiple times. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of sugar on the chopped onion, cover it and put it aside for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, a syrup trickles from the onion and anyone with a flu/cough should drink as much as possible. Some children might actually like this, as my eldest enjoys this onion juice while my youngest has to be given forcefully!! The juice will keep on trickling for a couple of hours and the onion should be discarded once all the juice has come out. The more you consume the juice, the better you'll feel.  It is especially helpful if you feel a fever coming up. You wont know unless you've tried it!!





2. Coconut Oil

Many children have an irritating cough which can be settled by giving them coconut oil. But for this we have to make sure that when giving them coconut oil, they should not have anything to drink or eat 30 minutes before or after. It soothes and provides relief to itchy and scratchy throat. Warm a teaspoon of coconut oil and drink, it coats that throat and in minutes the cough settles. For more irritating coughs sometimes it takes 5-10 minutes to settle down, but you will definitely see the difference in the first couple of minutes.

3. Warm Pineapple Juice

The best juice for cough relief is Pineapple Juice mixed with a little ginger and honey. It is FIVE times more effective than cough syrups. Tried and tested! Fresh Pineapples are available at some local grocery shops. The easiest recipe that I usually follow is to blend 1/2 cup of chopped pineapple with a small piece of ginger, sieve it and warm it in a water bath. Add honey and drink it.
